Savannah peered over at Peyton’s bowl, her spoon headed that way. “What kind did you get?”

Peyton offered her the bowl. “Rocky road. What did you get?”

Savannah held out her bowl. “Birthday cake.”

“What are you, nine?” Peyton asked.

“I like the sprinkles,” Savannah said through a mouthful.

The door to the ice cream shop dinged as the family who’d been sitting at the other table left. The guy behind the counter headed into the back, leaving them alone.

Peyton picked at a marshmallow. “Braxton and I hung out last night.”

Savannah set her spoon down. “By hung out, I assume you mean hooked up.”

Peyton shrugged, not meeting her gaze.

“And?”

Peyton took a bite and lifted her eyebrows, trying to hold back a smile.

Savannah pinched her in the side. “Tell me.”

“It was good…real good.”

Savannah shoved the ice cream away from her and gave Peyton her full attention. “Yeah?”

Peyton twirled her finger. “I did that thing.”

Savannah focused on her finger. “I have no idea what that thing is, but I have a feeling I need to learn.”

Peyton swatted her on the arm. “The massage, you ninny.”

“Oh, yeah. How’d that go?” Savannah grabbed her bowl back and took a spoonful.

Peyton lifted her shoulder, sort of hiding behind it. “Fun. Have you done that before?”

“No, but if it was this successful, I think I will. If I ever get a date again.”

“Oh, please.” Peyton waved her spoon at her cousin. “Look at you. You must date constantly.”

Savannah rolled her eyes. “Go on. The massage…”

Peyton eyed her. “Do you remember Calliope Koch?”

Savannah sat up straight, frowning. “Where did that come from? We were talking sexy massages.”

“From high school. She was two years ahead of you.”

“Of course I remember Calliope. How could you not?”

So Peyton wasn’t building Calliope up in her head like she’d secretly hoped. “Did you know Braxton took her out?”

Savannah waved her off like it was nothing, but there was something in her eyes that said differently.

“What happened there?”

“Just the usual. They went out a few times and it fizzled.”

Peyton narrowed her gaze, determined to get the truth out of Savannah. “Things don’t just fizzle with Calliope Koch. No one ever broke up with her. She was always the breaker.”

Savannah sat back, looking Peyton up and down. “High school’s been over a while now, Peyton. You never know how people change.”

Peyton spooned a glob of ice cream and let it drop back in the bowl. “I just can’t get the two of them out of my head.”

“How did you find out about them, anyway?”

Peyton shoved the bowl away. “I asked about his exes…who he’s dated all these years.”

“Why do you want to know that?”

Peyton shrugged. “I don’t know. It’s like there’s these missing years between us where I don’t know a thing about him. Who was he during that time? Who is he now?”

Savannah grabbed her cup and tossed it into the receptacle a few feet away. “Come on. Let’s go.”

“Where are we going?”

“To see Calliope.”

Peyton’s stomach went woozy. “What?”

“I know her a little,” Savannah said. “Remember, her mom owns that little boutique over in the Marigny.
